Easy to find but could be hard to re-hide. Hand carved stamp. Off I-19 To east frontage road from exit 56 (Canoa rd.) or exit 48 (Arivaca rd.) Go to Elephant Head rd. which is about half way between the exits. About 3 miles south of Canoa exit or 3 miles north of Arivaca exit.
Turn east on Elephant Head for about 1 mile. Over the Santa Cruz River bridge and railroad tracks. Look for Mount Hopkins rd. and turn right toward the Whipple Observatory. As you go up the hill you will observe the Observatory on your left and then straight ahead. After 7 miles you will come to the Visitors Center where you can picnic walk to some interesting vistas or visit to get some interesting facts. The center is open Mon.-Fri. but the picnic and hiking area is always open to the public. It is an interesting stop but onward and upward to the box. About 1.2 miles up from the center where the road turns into a one lane mountain road, there is an observation vista on the left. Park and you will see information boards. Behind the first on the right there is a big rock. Behind it is a pile of rocks. There you will observe the star. Alternate return route. 3.1 miles past the Visitors Ctr. look for marked road to the left.A dirt road easy to miss, which takes you past the famous Rex Ranch to the frontaqe road. There is a river crossing so be careful in the rainy season. Some nice vistas The box was re-placed on 10/13/2012.
