From Rt. 219 in Barkhamsted, follow signs for Ski Sundown. The trail head is almost across the street from there. When the driveway's not blocked off it should be OK to park in their lot but it is private property so if you're not comfortable with that, you can go 0.2 mi. northerly to a turn around ( on the left) with room for at least two cars by a pole with several blazes and arrows on it. Walking southerly past the ski area you'll see a blue arrow on a rock sending you into the woods on the right.

This trail is blue blazed all the way and is one of my favorite sections of the Tunxis trail and only about a mile round trip. The trail goes immediately up a steep hill but it soon becomes more gradual and when it levels off you see a rock ledge on the right, after which you make a sharp right turn and go up another steep hill. Near the top, on the right is a smaller moss covered ledge and as the trail becomes less steep you pass between ledges on both sides of the trail till you reach the crest and head downhill. Continue downhill for a ways till you come to ledges right on the trail and after going through the "squeeze," circle left at the foot of the ledge and look in the third nook or cranny to see obvious letterboxing bark covering your treasure. Make sure this is rehidden properly and then retrace your foot steps back to your car.
On the way back, in the winter, you get very good views of the ski slope. This wonderful stamp was carved for me by our own talented RTRW.

Hope you had a good time.
