Ute Campground is located 12-13 miles west of Pagosa Springs on Highway 160. Look for the entrance on your right just after you have passed the turnoff for Highway 151 and Chimney Rock.

The campground is closed seasonally, but there is an area by the gate for parking, and walking in is not prohibited in any season, although the box will not be accessible when there is snow on the ground.

As you enter the campground and head slightly downhill, a notice board is visible directly in front of you. Take the loop road to your right, and follow it around to campsite number 1. The road continues past this, but there is a sign warning that camping and fires are prohibited beyond this point. That sign is very important to Smokey.

Continue on the road past the sign, and you will walk between two large ponderosa pines, one on each side of the road. Continue a short distance, until you see a road coming in from the right. Do not take this road, but continue straight until you come to two square cement posts, one on each side of the road. Stop between these posts, and look to your left, where you will see a small thicket of juniper trees. Align yourself with the two cement posts, and walk into the center of that thicket, where you will see a small cement fire ring from an older campground, no longer in use. Just behind the old fire ring is a cement block that would have served as a cozy fireside seat. This is Smokey's campsite.

Behind the block, and covered by a small pile of broken cement pieces, you will find Smokey's tracks.

Please make sure to hide him well, and please do record your find when you get home.

*** For the first finder, you may be able to assist a small visitor to Smokey's camp who would love to travel to another site. (He is a little afraid of the bears in Smokey's camp, and would like to go graze in a safer spot!)

If you have time, stay and enjoy the forest and the campground!
