SOME THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!!
The only outhouse I found is on the start of Legion Rd at the Youth Group Camp Area. There may be more at the camp ground across the street but I don't know if you have to be staying at the campground.
These clues are placed in an area where HUNTING is allowed. Please! Dress in bright colors during any hunting season.
If you haven't done the boxes on the Henry R. Buck trail, bring them along. These clues are not as challenging as the Henry R Buck Trail.
I am still recovering from a hip injury, so some of these boxes are drive bys, and if they are on a trail they are not that far in. Each box has its own logbook and ink pad but it never hurts to bring your own..

DIRECTIONS;

From the NORTH:
Take Route 8 South to the intersection with Rte. 20 and Smith Hill Rd. XTRA MART / SHELL STATION is on the corner FYI:(they make a good cold cut grinder real cheap)(they also have PORT-O-LETS behind the building).
Turn onto Rte. 20 and drive for 2 miles until you reach the right turn for West River Rd.(if you go to far you will pass the sign for the Riverton Fair Grounds.) Turn right onto West River rd. and drive for 1-1/2 miles. Just past the second sign for the Henry R Buck Trail, turn right at the sign for Legion Rd. CAMP WHITE YGCA

From the SOUTH:
Follow Rte. 8 North past Exit 46 to where the highway portion of Rte.8 ends in Winsted. At that light, take a right.Follow to next light and take a right. FYI:(you will pass McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts on left. If you stop make sure to pull into McDonalds parking lot, because if you go into Dunkin Donuts you can't make a left turn out of the DD's parking lot.)
You will pass thru 3 stop lights really quick but then a mile or so ahead, you want to turn right at the 4th one, that is the intersection of Rte. 20 and Smith Hill Rd. There is an XTRA MART/SHELL Station on the corner.
FYI:(they make awesome cold cut grinders and have a nice little deli and it's cheaper than any subway and you get more food.) (PORT-O-LETS are behind the building)
Follow Rte. 20 for 2 miles to West River Rd. on right. Take that right and drive for about 1-1/2 miles past the 2 Henry R Buck Trail. Turn right at the sign that reads, Legion Rd. CAMP WHITE YGCA.

From the EAST:
Take Rte. 44 West until you go thru New Hartford center, follow past the Log House Restaurant on your right. FYI:(Stop in if you want some good home cooking at reasonable prices) After the gas station you will come to a flashing light. Turn right onto Rte. 318 / Ripley Hill Rd. Follow it down the curvey hill to the 4 way intersection. Turn left onto West River Rd. Drive for 2 miles. Just after the campgrounds on the right you will be taking a left onto American Legion Rd. If you miss this first left, take the next on onto Legion Rd. If you took the 1st left than take another left at this first intersection and you are now on Legion Rd.

From Legion Rd.
As you drive up the road you shall pass thru the metal gate to the ZOO. Take notice that the ZOO closes at sunset. Head up, just past a large pile of tree stumps and brush on your left. You should see a 3ft high stump about 25ft from the road. Behind this stump, you shall see the "LION"

After visiting the lion, head back to your car and drive up to the next big clearing on the left (just like the lion.. there is a pile of stumps and brush on the left.) See the 1-1/2 tree on the right side of the clearing. At the tree that is 1 tree and 1/2 a stump, take a reading of 130* . About 30 ft in front of you, should be the same kind of 1-1/2 tree. In front of that tree, behind the large rock, you will see "RHINO"

After visiting the rhino, drive up the hill. There is a pull off on the right.(park here) Across the road is a sign,"Turkey Vulture Ledges Trail" and a blue blazed trail. (This trail lives up to its name. As I was hiding this stamp I had 2 turkey vultures flying over head, and I also had a turkey cross in front of me on the trail.) Follow the trail up the hill, until you come to the stone wall on the right, at the tree with the 2 yellow bands. On the back side of the wall, under a small rock is the "PENGUIN" If you see a pipe with CSF69 behind the tree, than you are in the right place. Be careful of the barbed wire. Once done, head back to your car.

Drive further up the road until it ends in a big turn around. Park Here. Take the trail to the left, up the hill to the big 3 sister tree on the right. To its right is a big 2 sister tree with a rotten log laying behind it. Behind the log, in front of the rock you should see the "GIRAFFE" HINT: If you reach trees with yellow markings than you have gone to far.

Head back down to the car. Take the other trail. At the V in the beginning of the trail take the left trail. Follow a short ways until you start to go down hill. Look to the right (into the woods about 20 ft) for a 2 sister birch tree (bark peeling) that is next to a very large boulder. Behind the 2 sister tree is a long flat rock leaning against the boulder. The "ELEPHANT" is behind that rock.

Turn around and go back to the V in the trail. Take the left onto the other trail with the log across it. Go down trail until you come to where a tree has fallen across the path and there is a pine tree with 2 large knobs about 12ft up. Walk behind this tree to the 1-1/2 sister pine , with the 1/2 sister rotting on the ground. At the down hill end of the rotted sister, behind the single pine tree, under bark you shall find the "MONKEY". Now head back to your car.

I have saved Zebra for the ride back down the hill. Drive back down to just past Rhino. Just after you pass Rhino, but before you reach Lion, there will be a small pull off on right, with some pine rubbish blocking the trail. Park here and head up the trail. Walk up the hill until you come to what looks to be a dead 2 sister white birch tree. When you get up to it you will realize it was once a 4 sister tree. Under bark and limbs, at this tree is "ZEBRA".

THANK YOU!!! For visiting the ZOO
PLEASE!!! RESEAL AND REHIDE WELL
