Southwest Colorado is home to hundreds of excellent fishing spots. The Animas River is one of the premier fly fishing destinations in the area. Don’t forget to bring your fishing pole!
To find this letterbox, start on Main Ave in Durango. Turn on to E 16th St and go the south part of the parking lot where thousands of trout grow. You will see 2 large spruce trees with a set of 4 tree stumps in between the big trees. From there, start hiking SE on the gravel trail. As you cross a small wooden bridge, you will notice the large metal bridge ahead on the right that crosses the Animas River. Continue on the gravel trail until you reach the intersection with the concrete trail that goes over the big bridge. You’ll see a sign that reads “San Juan Audubon Nature Trail.” From this sign, head NE on the gravel trail to your left. Follow the gravel trail for about 100 yards until you see a sign on your left and a bench on your right (note, the bench will make a nice place to sit and stamp). From the sign that reads “Backyard Wildlife: How Close is too Close,” face toward the bench and take 7 steps backwards (a SW direction). Turn to the left (NW) and take 4 steps on the faint trail that heads into the bushes. Watch Out Trout will be in the rocks on your right.
This is a fabulous area for all day fun – great trails, parks, a fishing pond, the river, etc. Be sure to check out the pond on the opposite side of the parking lot – there are some monster trout! But you’ll have to leave your rod in the car. ;-)
