Directions :

From route I81 get off exit 247 B continue on East Market Street/ Route 33 until you reach Court Square. Take a right and park anywhere around Court Square.

Children Clues:

1) Start at the exit of the Rockingham County Courthouse. In 1779, Thomas Harrison donated two and a half acres of land to build the courthouse and Harrisonburg officially became a city. You should see a black fountain. Skip to the fountain and stop.

2) From the fountain go to the stairs. Do the math problem (8-3) to get how many steps you go down. Once you go down the steps take 8 big leaps until you get to the 2 steps.

3) Take a right on the sidewalk and hop all the way to the big white Springhouse. Go inside of the Springhouse and go around the fountain (1+2) times. Many civilians and Civil War soldiers quenched their thirst at this location.

4) After walking around the fountain leave the building and go right and skip straight until you get to West Market Street and stop!

5) Walk up to the shrubs and gallop around the building to the east entrance. You should end up at the front of the courthouse facing Main Street.

6) Go down the steps and cross the road. Make sure you hold your parents hands and be careful because of the traffic. Go to George’s Soda Sandwich Shop. Once you get there keep going straight until you get to the next street crossing.

7) Cross Federal Street and keep walking again till the next crossing.

8) When you get to the crossing, push the button on the pole and wait until you see the person light up on the screen across the street and cross.

9) When you get to the other side of the road go straight. You should pass a big church. Go until you get to the entrance to the Woodbine Cemetery. The Cemetery was chartered by John Kinney, A.B. Smith and 14 others in March of 1850, and they were given the right to purchase and hold not more than 15 acres of ground for the cemetery.

10) Once you enter the cemetery, go left and walk up the two little steps. Walk to the huge white monument. On January 21, 1876 the soldiers’ monument in Woodbine Cemetery was completed. Then after looking at the memorial return to the steps you entered.

11) Go around the loop and enter the square of shrubs. Find the tombstone of David S. Jones and go to your left, and in the corner of the shrub you will find a surprise.
