This series is a combination of two of our favorite things, Phish and the yellow, 2-dimensional characters from the greatest animated show of all time. We used some of our favorite characters from Springfield to help act out the lyrics from one of our favorite Phish songs.

There are two main entrances to Lynn Woods: Great Woods Rd and Pennybrook Rd. This series starts at Great Woods Rd.
You will need a map of Lynn Woods. You can find the most complete map here:

http://www.dieselbikes.com/images/lyw_biker_map00_2009_rev_2.pdf

The way that Lynn Woods is set up, the intersections correspond closely with the map. At each numbered intersection on the map, you will find a corresponding small blue sign on a tree with an appropriate marking. For instance, if you come to a tree marked D5-3, you can find it on the map in square D-5 and marked with the number 3.

Start your journey from the parking lot at the end of Great Woods Road. There are two main trails that you can take from the parking lot: one that starts at the very end of the parking lot on the left with a gate and stone pillars, and one that starts across the small field on your right. For today’s adventure, you will start at the trail on the left (at the pillars and gate).

Barney

Follow this trail straight past E6-3. Continue straight and immediately after you pass E6-1, you should see a very large fork in front of you. At the fork, bear right and continue on Great Woods Road. You will eventually pass D5-6. Very soon after D5-6, you will see Echo Rock (marked with a sign) on your right. Go out to the rock and let out your loudest DOOHHHHH!!!! and listen to it echo across the lake. From Echo Rock, turn around and look across the main trail from when you came. Directly across the trail you will see a large rock outcropping. Climb the outcropping to the lone pine at the very top. Take 5 steps past the pine at 185 degrees and look down to your left between a small stone and the rocky ledge. Here you will find Barney, taking a long nap after an afternoon at Moe’s.

Mr. Burns

Return to the trail and continue in the direction you were going. Travel past D5-3 and D5-2. At D5-7, take the first of the two lefts. Follow this trail up the hill to Steel Tower. You are going to go left on to the smaller trail at C5-6, but first you should go past it to the outcropping in front of you for an amazing view of the Boston skyline and a perfect spot for a second, earth rattling DOOOOHHHH!!!. Return to C5-6 and follow the smaller trail to the first fork (on your map it would be C5-8, but as of the planting, the marker was missing in the woods). At this fork, go left. Stay on this trail and eventually you will see a small rocky outcropping on your right. Right after the outcropping you will see 2 small boulders followed by a giant one. Go off the trail behind the giant boulder and you will see two other large boulders. In the very center of the large boulder on the right (at the base under some rocks) you will find the trillionaire that everyone loves to hate with his trusty log book.

Nelson

Return to the trail and continue in the direction you were traveling. Eventually you will come to D5-4 which is a 4-way intersection. Continue straight through the intersection. At D5-5, turn right and begin to head uphill to Stone Tower. This trail will work and weave its way up (it’s the toughest workout you’ll get in this series) to Lynn’s famous Stone Tower. You are going to be heading straight across past the tower and continuing on the other side, but first you should head up the steps of the tower and get another view of Boston and one last DOOOOHHHH!!! for the day (if you happen to find the tower open, let us know. It was recently restored but we have yet to see it open to the public). As stated above, you are going to be continuing straight across from where you came. As you begin to descend back into the woods, there should be a stone wall on your left for the first 10-15 yards. Follow this trail for a while as it twists and descends down the hill. On your left, you will eventually see a huge boulder resting precariously on a small rock on the edge of a small outcropping. Behind the boulder, look for the lone tree surrounded by smaller boulders. Look behind the tree under some small rocks. There you will find a Springfieldian who is well known for throwing the very rocks under which he is hiding. (If you get to the boulder with Queen’s Row spraypainted on it, you missed Nelson, turn around and head back up the trail about 50 yards).

Return to the trail and keep following it past Queen’s Row as it continues to descend. At E6-2 take a left. At the next intersection (E6-1) take a right back onto the main trail and follow it back to your car.
