Carley State Park

Carley State Park is located in the Bluffland Landscape Region. Towering white pines stand amid an oak forest at this beautiful park. In the spring, delicate bluebells and other wildflowers carpet the valley. The trail winds around the Whitewater River. Walk quietly and you might see white-tailed deer, beaver, coyotes, red and gray fox, pileated woodpeckers, great horned owls, and many migratory songbirds.

1. From the lone flashing red stoplight in Plainview, drive West on Hwy. 42.

2. Take a left on County Road 4.

3. Follow the brown signs to Carley State Park.

4. Follow the gravel road past the office, and down a hill until you come to a small parking area in front of a wide open grassy area.

5. Park your vehicle. On foot, look for an information sign and a blue sign that says Hiking Club Trail.

6. Walk on the gravel/dirt road that goes between the sign and the swing set.

7. Look for campsite # 8. You’re on the right track! Keep following the road.

8. Look for a sign with the word Toilets. Keep following the road.

9. On the right side of the road, you will see a brown, square sign indicating a hiking trail. Follow this trail into the woods.

10. This path will wind down the hill. Watch for wildlife and wildflowers!

11. Look for a large tree in the shape of a “Y” that has fallen against another large tree.

12. Continue along the path until you reach a map. Follow the path that turns to the left.

13. On your left, you will see a cluster of 6 trees. When you are standing parallel to these trees, stop!

14. Take 8 steps forward on the path.

15. On your right, you will see the trunk of a broken tree. You will find the letterbox inside the hollow spot. It might be covered up. Remember to cover it well when you are finished!
