On the way to Reid State Park,
Find the X-box for a lark.
Cross the bridge that used to sing
Then you’re in Georgetown, named for the King.
Pass Schoener’s Hill where we like to go sledding,
Also pass Bowman’s Landing to get where you’re heading.
In about a mile slow before the big curve
There on your right is Higgins Mountain Preserve.
Follow the boardwalks and towers of stone,
You can do it together or do it alone.
It’s not too long, it’s not that far,
It’s only a mile, you’ll be back to your car.
Go till you can’t go any higher.
Don’t go in a storm and don’t build a fire.
When you find the plaque at the topmost boulder
(It might be hot or it might be colder)
From the summit you can see Monhegan
And all around the maritime region,
At an elevation of 259 feet
It’s the highest spot in Georgetown and it can’t be beat.
Stand on the plaque: face the tall white pole
That connects to your cellphone if you pay the toll
Keep the celltower in the middle as you see
Two tree stumps right and left. Equidistant, that’s key.
Walk towards the left stump and then turn around
The rock you just stepped on’s where the X-box is found.
Bet you thought an X would mark the spot,
But not!
And should it be less than what you were X-pecting,
Don’t blame me, the hike’s the best thing.
Sit for a while and enjoy the view.
If you brought a picnic, enjoy that, too.
If you want to say thanks, give some $ to KELT
They do a fine job on the trails they’ve built.
