FRIENDSHIP BOX

St. Mary’s River State Park is at the end of Camp Cosoma Rd., off of Rt. 5 north in Callaway, MD.

Park fee is $3/vehicle and must be deposited. Hanging tags need to be hung and displayed in parked cars.

From parking lot and facing the lake, enter the trail at its left entrance.

Hike the trail and enjoy the small hills, scenery, and to your right, the view of the lake through the trees.

After the 0.5 mile marker, you will cross two wooden bridges.

After the small second bridge, there is a “three-stump” tree to your right.

The Friendship Box is nestled inside the three stumps, underneath leaves and a protective Y-shaped branch.

Inside the box, you will find directions for thinking about writing about friendship. Sit down, get out your journal and write, or write a quick entry along with your stamp in the notecard book.

Please return the stamp and notecard book to the plastic bag and put the plastic bag back into the red topped letterbox.

Please return the letterbox to its spot and cover it up with the Y-shaped branch and leaves. Be careful when picking up leaves – there are some sharp things among the trail floor.

FUN AND FROLIC BOX

After the 0.5 mile marker and two wooden bridges, continue further along the trail.

You will pass over another wooden bridge and then the 0.75 mile marker.

There will be a point soon after where you see the trail curve to the right, ahead of where you are.

You can also see, through the trees and after the curve, that there is another bridge.

The bridge would be about approximately 50 paces ahead (we measured).

Look to your left, and you will see a tall tree which has a trunk that is split at the base, which creates an intriguing interior cave.

Brush away the leaves at the base of the opening, observe the interior (just in case a critter likes this space, too), and you should find the red-topped letterbox.

Inside the box, you will find directions for thinking about writing about fun. Sit down, get out your journal and write, or write a quick entry along with your stamp in the notecard book.

Please return the stamp and notecard book to the plastic bag and put the plastic bag back into the red topped letterbox.

Please return the letterbox to its spot and hide it with leaves. Be careful when picking up leaves – there are some sharp things among the trail floor.

I LOVE RAIN BOX

After the 0.75 mile marker and Fun and Frolic box, continue along the trail.

When you approach the fifth wooden bridge (of the total from the beginning of the trail), take a right to the smaller and more mysterious and adventurous bridge, sans-handrails, which is the to the right of the main bridge.

At the smaller bridge’s beginning, turn to face the main bridge.

Focus on the beginning of the main bridge and it’s front ramp. Before the upright support post, there is a small space that hides the red-topped letterbox.

You will have to exit the small bridge, go to the ramp of the main bridge, and clear away leaves which conceal the box.

Inside the box, you will find directions for thinking about writing about rainy days.
