I don't know how "rattlesnake rock" got its name but I can certainly imagine that it is a lovely spot to live if you are one of those creatures. I have never seen a snake in the 30 years I have been visiting but it is definately rattlesnake country, so look before you step or reach.
Rattlesnake Rock is located on both sides of Low Gap Rd., 3.1 miles west of State Street. There is a pull out on the left (south) side of the road. The south rock has a spectacular view of the Orr Creek canyon. (Unfortunately, some of the folks who come to view leave their detritus behind). The north side of the road is also fun to explore.
The Rattlesnake Rock letterbox is located about 70 paces back towards town. There is another large rock face at that place. On the far east side of the rock (the side closest to Ukiah) the rock comes to a point like the prow of a ship. On the right side of the prow, there is a rock about 6 feet back. Nestled in a crevice behind that rock, under some leaves, you will find the letterbox.
