The Daring Disney Princesses

Cheshire Park is located off Rt. 10 in Cheshire. Rt. 10 is also known as Highland Avenue. The park resides between Creamery Rd and Stone Hill Rd. The park has two entrances. The one you want is off of Stone Hill Rd which you can easily get to from Rt. 10. Park in the lot between the tennis courts and the picnic pavilion for best access to the boxes. If you park near the basketball courts, walk across the baseball fields, past the red bathroom buildings and you’ll be at the pavilion.

The park is special to me because as a child, I grew up within walking distance of this location. We came here and found the steepest craziest hills for sledding in winter (Mixville’s awesome sledding hill is on the OTHER side of town.) In the summer, our group of friends brought blankets and food to the meadow after dark and watched the shooting stars in the beginning of August. My best friend’s little brother played Little League on the baseball fields and we saw James Van Der Beek in one of his first non-school productions (a Shakespeare-in-the-Park) at the stage near the tennis courts.

These Disney Princesses were a set of 4 erasers I found at the dollar store a few months ago. I bought them and decided I would learn how to carve using a design that was already made for me. So, these are my first “attempts” at carving! I warn you, I’m terrible with the faces. Now, you might be wondering why the Princesses are “daring”. Well, I know this park is frequented by many people all year long. It’s a popular place so beware! Re-hide all boxes better than you found them. Use stealth. None of the boxes have ink or a pen/pencil. Make sure you close the lids on all four corners, PLEASE.

Clues: You’ll want to head into the woods using the gravel path next to the picnic pavilion. The first box is almost immediately on your left. You’ll pass a row of evergreens and see a fallen friend about 5 feet off the path. (Beware of a few poison ivy plants here. If you’re allergic or unsure, avoid the plants with three leaves.) Princess Jasmine waits for you in the log, behind some small rocks. Rehide with care.

Continue on the gravel path and you’ll come to a meadow in the middle of the woods. There are several paths here, the one that’s straight ahead is most visible…but we don’t want that one yet. Start by walking around the perimeter in a counter clockwise position (aka veer right). You will come to a path on your right that leads into the woods (as of 11/3/11 it's harder to see due to a branch down from storm damage, but it will probably be removed soon). If you weren’t looking for it, you might have missed it but just duck under (or push aside) the leafy branches and walk in. You’ll walk straight (don’t veer right, the path disappears shortly if you do) and see a long fallen friend guiding the way towards the next princess. Follow the fallen friend on his left side towards a two-sister tree with a mossy trunk base. Go to that 2-sister tree. From there, look forward and towards your left. You’ll see (what used to be) a hole-y tree (but it came down in 2011's Winter Storm Alfred). Go to that hole-y tree. From there you will see a pile of fallen friends playing Twister. Interrupt their game by searching under the rotted trunk for Princess Ariel. Rehide with care.

Go back out to the meadow. Head back into the woods using the next path, the one that was visible from your view of the meadow when you first walked in. If you’re hiking with pets or kids who love to explore, use caution here because although the path is wide, it’s hugged by poison ivy on both sides. Head straight uphill, it’s not too far till you see that the path will go downhill (and towards the right in the distance). Before you head downhill, look to your left. You’ll see a tree that was visited by Rick & MM in ’84 and Renate in 1994. This is where Princess Bella decided to take a little nap. Hidden in the feet of the tree, under leaves and branches, she waits for your visit. Rehide with care.

Here’s where you have a choice. If you’d like to see a little stream and possibly some mud, continue straight. When the path veers right, take the path less chosen (but clearly visible) and go left. You’ll walk along the water’s edge and find a boardwalk to help you over the muddiest parts. The path goes uphill and levels out. You’ll see the meadow in the distance and a giant pile of discarded brush and cut logs on your right (near the entrance to the meadow). Go through the fern and head to the “back” of the pile. There’s one cut log piece that has rolled away from the rest of the pile, head towards that. From that log, you can see two other ground-level pieces of wood behind it. Between them, there’s enough space for you to find Princess Cinderella partying till midnight. OR, head back out to the meadow, continue counter-clockwise till you find the path next to the pile of brush. After a very short walk into the woods, you’ll see a piece of wood next to the brush pile. Cross into the fern and next to that piece of wood, you’ll find two ground-level pieces of wood with just enough room for Princess Cinderella to hide. Rehide with care.

Total time with stamping: under 45 minutes.
Suggested supplies: ink & pen, bug spray (it’s the woods and mosquitoes love the wet, woodsy areas), long pants (if allergic to poison ivy), sturdy shoes (I planted using sneakers), hiking stick (if you don’t like spiderwebs).
