CONFIRMED MISSING 9/17/04

This is an easy to moderate hike, more moderate if you do the whole loop, which has some steep sections and uneven footing.

Driving Directions:
From Route 1 in Freeport, directly in front of L.L. Bean, take Bow Street for 2.3 miles. Turn right onto Wolf Neck Road and continue for 2.1 miles to the entrance to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park on your left. (Check out the cool Belted Galloways on the way.)

There is a small entrance fee in the summer season. Pick up a trail map at the entrance gate, or off-season at the signboard at the far end of the parking lot.

Boxing Directions:
From the parking lot take the trail to the right of the signboard (SW). After about 40 paces turn right, up the Harraseeket Trail. Cross the Fire Road and pass the field on your right. Continue on through groves of birches and hemlocks. Cross the power line trail and go over the boardwalk at the intersection with the Hemlock Trail. You will soon cross Wolf Neck Road. Shortly after, on your right you will notice a large mossy boulder with claw-like roots grasping it. To the East of this boulder, spy a birch that is bending its knee. The Maine Blues Letterbox is beneath a rock behind the birch. Please close the box and bags tightly, as this could be a wet area, and we will not be able to check the box regularly.
Many Thanks.

You may turn around and return the same way for an 0.8 mile out and back walk, or continue on along the Harraseeket Trail and enjoy the views to the SW from high above the river. If you stay on this loop all the way to the Casco Bay Trail it will be about a 2 mile hike, with great views along Casco Bay.

If you haven’t already done the other box(es) here at Wolfe’s Neck, you can incorporate them into your loop. (Hoping the seemingly MIA Osprey might come home to roost)
