In Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, 10 Juniper Road, Belmont, MA
A Massachusetts Audubon property
Bring a compass and a pen. Park in the main lot. You may want to pick up a map of the property, (essential if you do not have a compass).
Take the Meadow Trail to the Turtle Pond Loop. Pass through the mature birch grove. When you come to the pond, walk clockwise around the edge of the pond on the board walk which ends at a fallen tree. You may wish to continue all the way around the pond to look for turtles. When you come again to the end of the board walk, just before E, turn left.
At the four way intersection near the old apple trees in the meadow, turn North West. Pass through two stone walls and look for G. Continue South East.
Opposite the vernal pool in the woods and surrounded by a holly bush, find the memorial plaque. Record letters #2, 11, and 24. Continue along the path.
Cross the wooden footbridge. Count the number of planks. Subtract 50 from this number and record the answer. Turn right onto Highland Farm Loop. At the second trail sign several paths meet (including Fern Trail) to form a triangular intersection. Go left. Soon after, turn up a log lined path.
At O continue straight 11/24/11. Enter the pine and oak forest. Pass through a stone wall and continue to an area almost exclusively pine. Watch for owls! We saw a great horned owl here once, late in the afternoon.
Look for the enormous pine tree with four trunks. From the right hand trunk walk 2/24/2 toward the dead, red, pine for the number of paces that was the answer to the boardwalk equation (a pace is one adult step). Beneath the tree in the small hollow log you will find the letterbox!
Return to the four trunk tree and continue on the Highland Farm Loop. Pass through another stone wall. Eventually turn left onto Fern Trail, cross a boardwalk, and return to G. Continue straight through a stone wall. At the Y intersection, bear right to return to the Visitor Center.
