Baron’s Dog Walk

Beltsville Community Center
3900 Sellman Rd.
Beltsville, Md.

Easy; Roundtrip 1.25 miles; on paved path; especially good for dogs; okay for bikes. It’s fairly accessible for wheelchairs. You’ll need an accomplice to retrieve the off path boxes. This is a very popular walk for dogs. They, or their owners, are likely to notice you – please be discrete. It’s also a good exercise trail for humans too – lots of different exercise stations, in fact we pace off from three of the stations.

From the Capital Beltway (495), exit at Rt. 1 South (exit 25). From Rt. 1, turn right or west onto Cherry Hill Rd. This is the first major intersection. There’s a shopping center on your right (College Park Marketplace). Continue west for a mile or so. Turn right onto Sellman Rd. It’s a T intersection. Follow the curves around to the Beltsville Community Center on your left. Park in the lot to the right of the Community Center.

The trail starts at the bridge.

Box #1: Baron the Great Pyrenees (Might be MIA as 8/1/2007; will replace soon)

Follow the trail to the Parallel Bar Walk. Walk another 40 paces (one step to a pace). From that point, walk ten paces to the right, you’ll see a hollowed out log which holds your treasure.

Box #2: Hanna, Baron’s buddy

Continue on the main path until you come to the Trunk Twist on the par course. On your right, there’ll be a small path that heads up into the woods. Just up the path, you’ll see three “conservatively” leaning trees. Nearest the north tree, there is a rotting stump on its side, holding something special. Make sure you put this back carefully so that no one sees it from any angle.

You can either continue on the small path, which will take you over the hill back to the paved path. Or you can walk back to where you left the main path. The main path takes you to a playground, swing sets and ball fields. You can have a swing at the playground or turn around and meet two more of Baron’s buddies.

Box #3: Gizmo, Baron’s alter ego

Next, stand in front of the Body Lift. About 10 yards beyond, there’s a rotting tree – look inside for your Giz Gal surprise. And remember to rehide it carefully- lots of camouflage.

Get back on the main path toward the parking lot.

Box #4: Aussie Doc, Baron’s neighbor (NOTE: MIA as of Aug 2007 - will replace soon.)

Pass the Parallel Bar Walk. To the left, is another paved path. Walk along it for approximately 125 paces. There’s a large oak on your right. Doc is behind it.

You have now completed Baron’s Dog Walk. Baron and his friends hope you enjoyed it!
