Cranes stand for peace and are a Japanese tradition. The tradition was introduced in 1955 and here is its story:

The corner of Santa Rosa and Marsh Streets San Luis Obispo sports a wonderful little park. Unfortunately, there seems to be a controversy over the spelling, some spelling Chang Park and some spelling Cheng Park. Either way you spell it it’s a moment of tranquility and beauty:

So head over to the park, pass by the scary lions and admire and sit awhile. After you’ve rested up from your fright at the lions count the stone benches. Take that number, multiply by three, subtract one and divide that number by two. Now save it by tattooing under your left eyelid or just remember it the best you can. Now leave by the way you came and stand on the corner. Cross the street at 30 degrees. Walk to the concrete wall which should be on your right. Stand on the sidewalk and walk along the rosemary hedge the number of steps you earlier calculated. Reach behind the hedge at this point along the wall and at its base for the Cranes on the Wing Letterbox.

Please be discreet as this can be a busy area. And thanks for coming!!
