Rest In Peace. We thought this Memorial Day weekend would be an appropriate time to plant this letterbox.
Behind the Backus Hospital, on Lafayette Street, sits the Yantic Cemetery. It is my understanding that there are 20,000 people buried there. That, to me, is mind-boggling! Among those are a number of Civil War dead, some of which died at Andersonville prison, and are buried in one location.
When you go in to the cemetery, follow the road to the right. Look for the flag pole. You will notice the cannon and the circle of stones honoring our war dead. Make sure to read the plaque. Next to the cannon are two bushes.(Note also the memorial stone between the bushes). Under the bush closest to the cannon you will find what you seek.
