Search for the Key: “Jackrabbit”

This box is part of the "Search for the Key" series. For more info, see the clue for [http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gBoxId=172609 The Key to the City]

“Hey mit me kid!” I sure outsmarted those genius’ at that so called “escape proof” hoosegow! Ha...they don’t call me “Jackrabbit” for nuttin’. I just smoozed myself right out of that cell using that fake bean shooter of mine! Piece o’ cake! Even took the sheriff’s wheels as my getaway.

I just read that by my crossing the state line, they’re a callin’ in the big guns! They’ve even elevated my status to public enemy #1. I’m the bee’s knees! Although, I’m feelin’ pretty good about the breakout, I’ve run into a bit of a snag with my getaway car. Turns out it’s a hayburner and I’m stuck in this joint....uh... kinda lost my way to the big city. Hate to admit it, but I kinda got stuck under a log.

I’m supposed to meet up with my gang and go up north to Wisconsin for some R&R. Maybe a little fishin’ to throw off dem G-men. But shoot, at this point I can’t even make it to the south side of Chi-town.
Hey, I gotta deal for ya...I’ll give you a cut of my next hoist if you come help me outta this mess. Better yet, I’ll give you the keys to the city if you come and get me outta this pickle. I’ll even throw in a bonus if you don’t tell nobody nuttin’ about where I am! Oh yeah, you might want to bring a little “dog soup” wi'cha. They don’t allow no hootch and the coppers are all over the place. So, shake a leg and spring me from this mosquito filled hangout so I can spend a little time with my moll before heading up to Wisconsin!

In case some gumshoe is trying to find my whereabouts through you, I’m gonna give ya some clues, so “shadap” and listen....

Once you “figger out” the location. Go to the entrance, but do not turn in. Park on the south side of the street in a gravel turnoff west of the entrance, but east of the bridge and “T” intersection. There is a “No dumping” sign (readable only if facing east) The trail head is to the south and noted with a “NO HUNTING” sign. Follow this trail with the creek on your right. You’ll pass a split rail fence and road on your left. Continue on being careful when it comes time to cross the paved road. Follow the path (can be wet and mosquitoey) until you come upon an old stone bridge. Cross over the bridge and count 41 steps to a large fallen tree on the left that has a saw cut end on the southern most end. I am hidden about 2 feet north from the cut end on the backside.

Once you get me, and hide all evidence that I was here, your gonna have to return the way you came. Now scram! or I’ll have to take ya for a little ride....

Please note: This following advice, taken from another letterboxers clues, is good for all letterbox adventures. The trails are generally safe, but there has been crimes in the Cook County Forest Preserves of people breaking into cars or attacking folks on the trail. We recommend you: (1) do not box alone (2) be aware of your surroundings and the people around you (3) lock all valuables out of sight in your car [perhaps put things in the trunk before you arrive at the parking lot] (4) bring a cell phone to call for help if needed (5) do not box after dark and (6) if you feel uncomfortable, WALK AWAY from the perceived danger. Do not take risks to seek out any of our boxes. With that said...Have safe fun!
