Canyon Overlook Trail
Rocky Gap State Park
12500 Pleasant Valley Road N.E.
Flintstone, MD

NOTE: This box was replaced in a new location on 9/13/2005. The box was originally placed on 9/23/2003, but was damaged twice by critters, and temporarily removed on 7/5/04. We hope the box will survive in its new location. We replaced the book and stamp and updated the clues below on 9/16/12.

This is an easy loop trail of 0.4 miles. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Rocky Gap State Park has a variety of hiking trails. You can read more about the park and get directions to the park at:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/rockygap.asp

We reached the park from Exit 50 of Interstate 68. The exit leads directly into the park. You can take the first right turn to visit the park office. They sell a topographical map of the trails for $3 and have a free Nature Guide to the Canyon Overlook trail. Neither is necessary to find the letterbox. If you visit the park office, return to the main road.

On the main road, follow the signs to the Aviary but don't turn in. Instead, continue on to a parking area on the left side of the road; this is the best place to park. To the right, the road continues on to the spillway. Walk up the road a short distance to a set of wooden stairs on the left; they are the beginning of the Canyon Overlook Trail.

Once up the stairs, follow the path to the right. The trail forms a loop with numbered posts marking the path. Trail post 6 marks the overlook itself. You can't see Rocky Gap Run, but you can certainly hear it as it makes its way down the gorge. Continue on the marked trail. At trail post 10, take 30 steps (not paces)on down the trail to a broken stump of a pine tree 4 feet off the left of the trail. It's fallen trunk points to two oak trees about 15 feet beyond. The Rocky Gap Letterbox is in the fork of the oaks.

When we last visited the Park, the trail posts had been renumbered. We have updated the clues, but for future reference post 10 is currently next to a tree in the middle of the trail.

The trail is a loop and if you continue on you will return to your starting point,.

Let us know if you enjoyed the Canyon Overlook and other trails at the park, and give us a report on the condition of the box. Thanks.
