Location: Gates Pond, Berlin, MA
Hike Length: 2.3 miles
******RED ALERT******CLUE CHANGES******RED ALERT******

When we first planted this series, it was in the end of November. Since returning to check on them in May we noticed that some of our boxes were surrounded in poison ivy. We have gone back and moved 3 of the boxes to different locations, trying to keep everyone as itch free as possible. There still may be some around so keep your eyes open, we did the best we could.

The Powerpuff Girls was one of Katrina's favorite cartoons when she was little, so we decided to give it a try. The cartoon took place in "The City of Townsville". Like any city, Townsville was run by "The Mayor". He was not much of a politician, but he loved his pickles. His biggest fear was that someone would destroy the pickle factory. The real brains behind running the city was that of Miss Bellum. (We didn't add her to the set, maybe another time. And if you didn't know, her first name was Sara. That's right, the brains of the city was Sara Bellum.) Anyways back to the story. Meanwhile, one of the city's most famous inventors, Professor Utoniun was trying to create the perfect child. His ingredients were Sugar, and Spice, and Everything Nice. While stirring up his mixture, his pet monkey and lab assistant Jojo, started going crazy breaking everything in sight. He crashed into the Professor and broke a canister of Chemical X, spilling it into the Professor's formula. It also spilled onto the monkey changing the loveable pet into the evil Mojo Jojo. The Professor's formula worked like a charm and Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup were born. The Chemical X mixed in gave the girls their super powers. After they learned how to control their new powers, the city counted on them to save the day, whenever there was trouble in Townsville.

This was our first attempt at carving for planting puposes. The stamps are rather large, but we can proudly say that they were all hand drawn by Cliff and hand carved by Katrina.

***Now for directions to our boxes.*** They are located at Gates Pond in Berlin at the end of Taylor Road. Take 495 to Exit 26 (rte 62). Take Rte 62W toward Berlin, not Hudson. After you go under 495 and pass the South onramp, Taylor Rd. is the first left, just before the Shell Gas Station. Take Taylor Rd. to the end and park. This is a very popular area, so please be very discreet, lots of muggles.

***Now for the clues to find our boxes*** Walk thru the stone pillars and stop at the stop sign on the chain. Please read all the rules carefully. Gates Pond is the town of Hudson’s drinking water so please keep this in mind. Enter the trail passing another drinking water sign on your right. The trail is wide enough for vehicles and is a very easy hike. When you get down to the pond, take the trail to the right keeping the pond on your left side. Notice the small pump house out on the point. This will be our City of Townsville. As the trail turns to the left you can see where the pond is fed by a small brook which crosses under the trail. From this brook, start counting the yellow signs on your left. Just after the 2nd sign, you will get a good view of the pond. Then you will see a stonewall on your right, coming down off the hill. There is a metal post on the right of the trail at the end of the wall. Appoximately 5 paces after the post stop. Go into the woods on your right about 45 paces to a large broken oak branch laying on the ground. The Mayor is behind the branch at the large end under sticks. Please watch for muggles and re-hide well.

Get back on the trail and continue on. You will pass another water supply sign on your right and a large birch tree on your left. Then you’ll see another water sign on your left. These signs are the Mayor’s rules to the city, so please obey. From this sign, take about 32 paces and you will come to a very small trail on your right.Take this trail about 25 paces or so to a rock on your right. This rock looks like a scale on the back of a stegasaurus. Behind this rock, under sticks and rocks you will find our sinister simian, Mojo Jojo. Please re-hide well.

Continue along the trail. You will start to descend a small hill. You will be able to see Townsville off in the distance. Pass thru a stone wall and you’ll see a “clean-up after your animal” sign on your left. Then you will see several big boulders on the left. The trail now goes back up a small incline. At the top of the hill notice a rock outcropping on your left. Let’s call this the Professor’s Lab. Around back near the triple-trunked ash tree under the rock you’ll find “The Professor” under sticks and leaves. We noticed a little bit of poison ivy here so be careful. Also the ice storm made a mess of the area so again be careful.

Continue around the pond as the trail goes down a small hill then back up again. You will pass a rock with 2K in white paint on your left just before another sign. Then down yet another small hill til you reach the farthest point of the pond. You will cross over a small causeway and get a spectacular view of the beautiful pond. As you cross you will go over a small spillway on your right. (pretty cool) Just after the spillway on your right is another “clean-up after your animal” sign. There is also a small trail here that goes off to the right. If you do this hike in the late spring, we noticed a lot of lady slippers in the area. Take this trail roughly 45 paces and notice a 4 trunked oak tree on your left. Our 1st girl Bubbles is playing hide and seek behind the trees under bark and leaves and sticks. Please re-hide well.

Return back down to the main trail and continue around the pond. After a little ways, the trail turns to the left and follows the pond. Then you’ll come to a cool rock out-cropping on the right. You can play Lion King on the rock abutting the trail if you want to. Katrina did. The rock also has a white cross on it. Just after the Lion King rock, there is another drinking water sign on the left. From this sign take approx. 65 paces to a mini-rock outcropping on your left. About 25 ft. off the trail, behind the middle of the rocks on the left, you’ll find Blossom, guarding the pond under a rock with sticks and leaves.

Back onto the trail and you’ll pass a triangular clearing on your left. There is another sign here and a path takes you down to the shore. Continuing on you will walk over a 3K painted spot in the middle of the trail. Keep going until you come to another “clean-up after your animal” sign on your left. From here you can see Townsville again, only in the fall. During sping and summer the foliage blocks your view of the pump house. There is also a trail that goes off to the right. Take this trail about 45 paces up to a large boulder on your right roughly 50 feet off the trail in the woods. Buttercup is sitting on the back corner of this boulder, under bark and leaves, marked with sticks playing king of the hill.

After re-hiding go back to the “clean-up” sign and turn right. You’ll go past Main St. Townsville on your left. If you want one last look at the pond, take a walk down Main St. After you have finished, go back up and continue on the trail. One more drinking water supply sign on your left. After a very short way you will be back to a place you should remember. Notice the trail on your left. This is where we started our journey around the pond. Continue past this trail until you come to a lone triple-trunked birch tree on your right. There is a trail off to the right just after the birches. Take this trail. There is a boulder blocking the middle of the trail. From this boulder, follow this trail approximately 80 paces to an old bare tree that has fallen across the path. Step over the tree and walk roughly 20 more paces to a broken pine top on your right. Look left and notice a dead bare log about 6 paces off the path. Our final box, The Logo is hidden in the log’s stump hole. We know it is near the highway and sometimes loud, but it is away from the main path, and a good place to stamp in our Logo. We have provided colored pencils if you would like to bring the girls to life.

After stamping in, return to the main trail and go right, your car is just up ahead. We hope you enjoyed our first plant. We would like to conclude by thanking Zess for all her help providing us information so we could prepare our boxes properly, and try to give every letterboxer a great experience. We would also like to thank Carissa {C M C} for helping us scout out hiding places.
