What better way to spend the Fourth of July than to plant a letterbox? I picked a location that was used around the time of the revolution. A local farmer who sympathized with the British hid here to avoid having to fight against them.

Find the intersection of Preston Road and Route 72 in Terryville. Take Preston Road East to a T intersection and turn left. In about a half mile you will reach a gate with a small parking area. Park here and walk past the gate.

Shortly you will be on the Tunxis Main Line Blue Trail. Go straight on the old road that is the trail. Be careful to stay on the marked trail. Recent loggers left many side trails. In about .75 mile you will reach an intersection with the Yellow Dot Trail. Tory Den itself is a busy place so stop here to find the box. At the tree marking the Yellow Dot Trail sight 70 degrees. About 35 paces will bring you to a large two sister stump. Behind the stump in the new growth you will find something to celebrate.

This is a great vantage point to look ahead to see the rock outcrop. Another .15 mile on the Yellow Dot Trail will bring you to Tory Den. Walk on up and explore. Due to recent logging you now have a long view to the east. Return to your car the way you came.
