The Nehalem Bay Letterbox was placed on July 14, 2002 by Brett, Penny, and Grace near Manzanita, OR. The letterbox is on the Mt. Neahakanie Trail in the Oswald West State Park. It has spectacular views of Nehalem Bay and another letterbox (the Mt. Neahkanie letterbox). The box is on the Mt. Neahkanie trail instead of nearer to the bay due to lack of good hiding places for the box. Nehalem Bay offers a multitude of activity including crabbing, fishing, and camping. Lucky hikers can spot seals at the end of the spit in Nehalem Bay State Park.

To get to the trailhead from Portland, take highway 26 to highway 101. Go south on 101 to a brown hiker-symbol sign between mileposts 41 and 42. Go east up a gravel road about a half mile. The road widens enough to park in a couple of spots. A post marks the trail.

TERRAIN:

The trail gains about 700 ft of elevation in about one mile via numerous switchbacks. Trail is rocky and a bit rough from exposed roots in places. The trail mostly flattens out after the letterbox so be sure to continue to enjoy the view from the top.

CLUES (Easy):

About a mile up the trail you’ll see a trail post just before the trail crosses a dirt road. About 50 steps further on the trail is a big tree on the right. A fallen tree in front of it makes a nice bench. The letterbox is behind the tree, under a rock.
