HINENI (HEE-NAY-NEE)RED

-in memory of Ruth Quiriconi

Many hikers and letterboxers have come upon locations of such majesty and natural beauty, where they feel they have been in the presence of a Power greater than themselves. Some have heard their Creator call out to them in these places. Some have responded, "Hineni! Here I am!" and thus identified themselves as people who have a place in their lives for the sacred and the divine.

The Hineni Series of six letterboxes represents the colors that were mandated to be woven into the curtain which once hung in Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, separating the people from the Holy of Holies. This series celebrates people who in death have passed through this curtain, but in life walked daily with divine companionship. The six letterboxes are all hidden in locations of blessed peace and Nature at her finest.

Get to Mt. Carmel Avenue in Hamden, which passes by the main entrance to Sleeping Giant Park. Pass by the Main Entrance and continue to the intersection of Mt. Carmel Ave. and Ridge Rd. (about .2 mile). Drive just a little more past the intersection, around the bend, and to the left you will see a small turn-off and trailhead where a few cars can park. You can start at this trailhead which will connect with the RED CIRCLE TRAIL. Or you can walk back up Mt. Carmel Ave. the way you came, and find the RED CIRCLE TRAILHEAD on the right at a rotting tree. This hike is for experienced hikers, and people who can be cautious of wildlife. (There have been snake sitings in this section of the park.)

Follow the Red Circles, through the intersection with the Yellow Square trail, and you will come upon a red circle with a white 8 painted on a rock in the middle of the trail. A little farther on the trail you will see to the left, a red circle and white 7 and then a white circle and red 11. Look for the curved white double arrow pointing to the white blazed trail to the right. Carefully follow the white blazes up the ledge.

Continue to follow the white blazes along the edge, enjoying the view. The trail will step down once. Continue on. The trail will approach a second steeper step down. STOP! Look to the right to see a lone red cedar, 12 steps away, growing from the rock. Go to the cedar, and look to your left. 9 steps to the left you will see a knobby rock covered with lichen. The Hineni Red letterbox is hidden under that rock. (The Right Knee Letterbox from the Drew Family is nearby.)
