HINENI (HEE-NAY-NEE)

- in memory of Rev. Michael Bell

Many hikers and letterboxers have come upon locations of such majesty and natural beauty, where they feel they have been in the presence of a Power greater than themselves. Some have heard their Creator call out to them in these places. Some have responded, "Hineni! Here I am!" and thus identified themselves as people who have a place in their lives for the sacred and the divine.

The Hineni Series of six letterboxes represents the colors that were mandated to be woven into the curtain which once hung in Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, separating the people from the Holy of Holies. This series celebrates people who in death have passed through this curtain, but in life walked daily with divine companionship. The six letterboxes are all hidden in locations of blessed peace and Nature at her finest.

Traveling Rt 95N, take Exit 30 (Lordship Blvd. RT 113). At the end of the exit, continue straight, staying in the far right lane, if possible. At the 7th traffic light, turn right and follow Rt 113. This will take you across the causeway which bisects The Great Salt Marsh. As you travel the causeway, notice: if the water is flowing to the right under the causeway, then the tide is going out; if it is flowing to the left, the tide is coming in.

Come to the end of the causeway and a stop sign. Continue straight across the road and park along the side. Now walk back along the left side of the causeway just for a little bit. Notice the concrete block that anchors the steel cables of the guardrail. You will be stopping at the next one that you meet. As you walk, count 23 metal posts of the guardrail. Between post #23 and post #24, STOP. If you pass that second concrete anchor, you have gone too far. Look left a little down the bank, and you will see a pile of three round, flat stones. The Hineni Lapiz Letterbox is hidden under those stones.
