Major League Baseball Player. The right-handed pitcher spent his entire eight-year big-league career with the Boston Red Sox. He tailed off to 12-15 in 1943 but led the AL with 20 complete games. Hughson bounced back in 1944 with an 18-5 record and 2.26 ERA. He was 20-11 with a 2.75 ERA as the Red Sod breezed to the 1946 American League pennant. He pitched well in Game 1 of the World Series against St. Louis, giving up seven hits and two runs in eight innings. He got no decision as Boston won 3-2 in 10 innings. He took the loss in Game 4 when he was shelled for five hits and six runs in two innings. He pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief in Game 6, but the Cards won 4-1. He was named to the AL All-Star team in 1942 (he did not play), in 1943 (he gave up two runs in three innings to close the AL's 5-3 win) and in 1944 (he was the losing pitcher as the National League scored four times in the fifth for a 7-1 victory). Hughson's lifetime record was 96-54 with a fine 2.94 ERA. (bio by: Ron Coons)
From I 35, at 204b exit, take old RR 12 through downtown, past courthouse and square, then right at light. Go through another light, and then RR 12 climbs hill. Find cemetery entry on left near top of the rise (you can't miss it). Turn left into cemetery and go straight back, road curves right then at intersection, turn right on Sunset Lane, as it turns right you should pull off left and park near green outhouse.
To the Letterbox:
Walk past outhouse and along the Chain fence until reach corner with wire fence. Turn left and follow wire fend until cement plot border comes to edge of fence. Continue along fence about 10 more feet to a mult trunk tree next to fence. Box is on this side of base, under stuff.
