Difficulty: Moderate; about an 8-10 minute hike
The 4 Okies are four krazy women who share a love of the outdoors! Three of us are cousins who have been coming out to the Topside Cabin west of South Fork for over 30 years. In the summer of 2011, we brought our friend out to see this beautiful place. It was the summer that we also began to letterbox. Topside Hikers is our first effort to place a letterbox, and we are planning to add to our series of outdoor adventures. Our friend made this cool stamp!
The Topside Hikers Letterbox is located off of Highway 160 approximately 10 miles west of South Fork, Colorado. Between mile markers 176 and 175, pull off the highway at the Lake Fork Trailhead and rest area. Here you can read about the Colorado Cats and Super Volcanoes. Head up the trail and enjoy the smell of the clean, cool mountain air. Shortly you will cross a bridge over the falls. Continue up the trail and around the sharp switchback to your left. Look for the pointed rock on your left that looks like it is growing out of a tree. Next you will pass a giant, smooth boulder that you can touch with your right hand. The next landmark is a fallen Aspen tree on your right that is pointing down toward the falls. Stop when you reach the large “rock eating tree” on your right. At the downhill side of the tree root, take a compass bearing of 10 degrees and find the large rock that looks like a toad. You will find the Topside Hikers Letterbox under the toad. Please be discreet and please put the box back carefully the way you found it. The hike on up above is a beautiful one if you are so inclined.
Please note that a stamp pad is not included in this letterbox.
