As of March 17, 2013 Box is missing! We found only a plastic fragment :( We hope to replace and update box by late spring. Please check back later.

For this letterbox you will need a pencil in order to write down clues. The length of the hike from the box back to the parking lot was approximately 20 minutes for us with young children. The difficulty we believe to be moderate—the way in is mostly uphill with some rocks and tree roots on the path, though not strenuous. The majority of the path is wide, with a few exceptions. (Not stroller friendly.)

Start your hunt at the Long Pond parking lot of Middlesex Fells Reservation on Mystic Valley Parkway (aka South Border Road) in Winchester, MA. This parking lot is near the intersection of South Border Rd. (Mystic Valley Parkway) and Highland Ave.

Take the trail with the stone steps to the right of the message board. Continue past the three-fingered tree in the middle of the path. On your left, there will be an interpretive sign for the Long Pond Nature Trail. This was the site of a Girl Scout _ _ _ _ _. Take the 1st letter of the word and put it on the line for clue #1.

Take a curving left onto the pink trail after this sign. Go past the empty brown signpost in the open grassy area. Listen closely and you may hear a wood thrush; he has a very unusual call. Keep going straight. There will be a trail sign on a post to your right. What is the name of the other trail going the same direction as the Long Pond Trail? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Write the 6th letter of the first word on line #2.

Go up the rocky hill and keep left as you move into a carpeted pine forest. Eventually there will be a small pond on your right and a brook coming from it on your left, which has a natural critter bridge across it. Watch for chipmunks scurrying past; we saw quite a few. You will find a third trail sign on your right. What is the green metamorphic rock called? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The 10th letter is clue #3.

Continue on the trail. There are several trees growing out of the rock outcrop on your right. When you reach a mostly clear area on your right, there will be another interpretive sign on your left. What type of pool does it describe? _ _ _ _ _ _ Clue #4 is the 5th letter.

This next area has a lot of tall pine trees. In the spring (April-June), watch for pink lady slippers in bloom. Look for two large oval leaves with deep veining and a stalk that comes about 5 – 6 inches off the ground with a vibrant pink blossom. Watch and you may see a bee enter the slipper from the top and exit from the bottom! Please be careful—lady slippers are endangered! Go up another rocky hill and at the top there will be another sign. What type of woodland garden is this? _ _ _ _ _ _ The 4th letter is your next clue.

Continue down the hill and then up another hill. Look to your right as you go down the hill, and you can see Long Pond through the trees. At the crest of the hill, turn left onto a smaller trail. There is a pink trail marker on a tree opposite the trial head. (Do not take either of the trails about halfway up the hill with a “no bicycles” sign.--The opening of the trail you want to take is smaller, less grassy, and at the top of the hill.) If you reach the “#6 The Pond” interpretive sign at the bottom of the hill on your right you have gone too far.

This next trail will still be marked with pink spray paint on trees. A large fallen tree will be on your left adjacent to the trail. You will see a trail with a tree in the middle of it that is marked with pink. This is the trail you want to take. There will be a large rock outcrop with a young pine tree growing out of it on your right. When you reach the interpretive sign, the Native Americans’ last leader was a female what? _ _ _ _ _ _ Take the first letter of this word, and use it to complete the clues.

Now fill in this blank with the word you created, and follow the directions: Go to the top of the hill, and look at the base of two ________.
