Furnace Run Park is located at 4955 Townsend Road in Richfield, Ohio. It is one of the parks included on the list for the Fall Hiking Spree sponsered by the Metro Parks system. There are facilities at the pavilion, and it is beautiful - it is often rented out for small groups. Dogs are permitted if kept on a leash.
The park used to be a favorite swimming spot until erosion closed the lake in 1956. The 890 acre park was donated to the MetroParks system in 1921. The mosquitos are unforgiving if they find you, so beware.
Enter the parking lot and follow the brick path past the pavilion and over the bridge till you come to the trailhead. Turn left following the Rock Creek Trail. The trail is 1.2 miles long. Hiking level is easy.
Cross over the first bridge, the trail winds along the creek. You will notice wildflowers and an abundance of beech, maple and oak trees. There is a certain "Oak" tree to find the "OAK"ee Dokee box.
After the first bridge, the trail winds around for some distance, the trail takes a bend to the left. When the trail makes a rise, you will see another bridge in the distance, about 100 yards. Look to your right. You will see a HUGE Oak tree, we estimate it to be 10 feet, maybe more, in diameter. Climb the bank in the safest way and you will find your treasure at the back of that oak tree. If you cross over a 2nd bridge, you missed it...go back!! Of course then the big oak will be on your left!!
Please bring your own pad or marker to do your stamping. There is a small dead trunk that is a nice place to sit. Be sure to replace the contents and the box in the plastic bag for others to find.
Be stealth , as always. Enjoy the rest of the trail, you will have 3 more bridges to cross. The path ends in a beautiful picnic area that you might want to consider for your next adventure. Then you are back at the parking lot.
