Directions for reaching Howland Marsh letterbox.

(Note:Howland Marsh is part of the Sippican Land Trust.)

Begin in Marion at the the "four corners": the intersection of Route 6 and Route 105. Travel east on Route 6. At the first stop light, turn right on Point Road. Follow Point Road for 2.6 miles. Landmark: when you see the white stucco wall with the orange tiles on top, slow down. The Howland Marsh entrance is on the right just after the 35 mph sign. You can pull over on the side of the road.(If you reach the Kittansett Golf course on your left, you have gone too far.)

Enter the path at the space in the low stone wall where you see the sign: Howland Marsh Sippican Lands Trust. Watch out for poison ivy and cat brier. Follow the path down to the water. Note a small shed on your right. You will pass under a large holly tree. You will reach a boardwalk. Walk to the end of the boardwalk. Note view of Marion harbor on your right and Planting Island Cove straight ahead and outer Marion harbor beyond.

Turn around. Walk back along the boardwalk. Walk 14 paces from the end of the boardwalk. The letterbox USED to be on your left under some tree limbs. The log rotted out so we have moved it back 24 more paces to a three-tree hollow on the left.

Enjoy!Note the stamp is a homemade whale stamp in honor of the Howlands who were whalers in the 19th century. If you want to find out more about them, visit the Whaling Museum in New Bedford.

We really enjoyed setting up this letterbox. We have put letterboxes at three other Sippican Lands Trust sites off Point Road.
Signed 9 Howland descendants.
