HINENI (HEE-NAY-NEE)

- in memory of Steve and Vickie Zisk

Many hikers and letterboxers have come upon locations of such majesty and natural beauty, where they feel that they have been in the presence of a Power greater than themselves. Some have heard their Creator call out to them in these places. Some have responded, "Hineni! Here I am!" and thus identified themselves as people who have a place in their lives for the sacred and the divine.

The Hineni series of six letterboxes represents the colors that were mandated to be woven into the curtain which once hung in Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, separating the people from the Holy of Holies. This series celebrates people who in death have passed through this curtain, but in life walked daily with divine companionship. The six letterboxes are all hidden in locations of blessed peace and Nature at her finest.

Get onto Whitney Avenue (Rt10) in Hamden heading North toward Sleeping Giant Park and Quinnipiac University. Do not turn onto Mt. Carmel Avenue, as if you were going to the park. But stay on Whitney until you pass Wentworth's Ice Cream Parlor on the right. (Well worth a visit after your hike!) Take the next right, Tuttle Avenue, immediately after passing Wentworth's. Travel no more than .2 mile, passing the golf course and River Rd. on your left. (Steve was a professional golfer.) Looking ahead, when you notice the road dipping, STOP and look to the right. There is a trailhead and parking for about three cars. If you pass the horse farm, you have gone too far. Park and follow the RED CIRCLE TRAIL.

This is an athletic and completely uphill hike, following beautiful cascades (when there has been rain) and the Gorge lined with hemlocks. Though slippery, this is one of our favorite hikes when there has been a snowfall.

Follow the RED CIRCLE blazes until the trail becomes lots of broken stones. These are the remains of mining efforts at this part of the park. BE CAREFUL OF YOUR FOOTING. The Red Circle Trail intersects with the VIOLET TRAIL entering from the right. Turn right onto the Violet Trail, and walk just a bit until the trail passes through a group of six stately oaks (a three sister on the right, twins and a single on the left). Standing among the oaks look uphill to the left to another oak that has a big lump at its base. It might have been used as the Giant's golf club! The HINENI OCHRE LETTERBOX is hidden behind the tree under a flat stone.
