In Weed, CA, Highway 97 leaves the I-5 and heads north-east into Oregon. Before reaching the Oregon border, the 97 passes through Butte Valley, home to one of two National Grasslands west of the Rockies. (The other is in Central Oregon.) In the middle of the valley, about halfway between the small towns of Dorris and Macdoel is the Butte Valley Airport, a small, unattended civilian airport that is little more than a runway, tie-down pad, light tower and payphone.

Look for the red and white light tower on the west side of highway. Keep an eye on the tower as the blue airport sign is easy to miss at 65MPH. Turn onto the short dirt road by the sign and park near the payphone andf light tower.

Notice the large vehicle gates that lead onto the tarmac. Facing the gates, you will see a small pedestrian gate. Enter here onto the airplane parking area. The words 'BUTTE VALLEY' are painted on the tarmac. Go to the first T in BUTTE. Start at the top crossbar of the T and walk down the long part. Keep going straight when you reach the bottom of the T and continue to a cluster of bushes at the edge of the tarmac. The box is under the bushes and is covered with sticks and rocks.

There is no need to be discrete as you will probably be the only one there. : )
