My five-year-old grandson has completed another carving. It is a tribute to one of the many farms that used to be an integral part of life in Middlefield.
Directions:
Find your way to Coginchaug Greenway, a 45-acre open space area located on Strickland Road in Middlefield. Strickland Road connects east to Cherry Hill Road and west to Route 157. Parking on the site is a concrete foundation. Signage at the foundation identifies the site.
Clues:
Make your way to the Lower Trail by crossing the sometimes hayed field or following the mown trail, easily identifiable inbetween hayings. As a marker, you'll see a bench on a hill above you to your left (Upper Trail). When the leaves are gone, you might even be able to notice interesting "toys" the neighbors to the right have. The grassy trail eventually begins to enter a more woodsy area. Ignore grassy side trails. As the trail veers right and begins downward, you will see a largish cedar on your right, with a small group of largish cedars on your left. The brook is beyond them. Under a SPOR and an anchor root you'll find the Strickland Tractor. Please replace the box under the anchor root before replacing the rocks as the area sometimes floods. If you reach a bench on your right or get to the picnic table, you have missed the cedar.
Note:
Middlefield residents can obtain permits for hunting in our open spaces. Please wear orange during hunting season.
