12 Months in a Year – September BOX RELOCATED 7/2/12

This is a series of 12 boxes observing each month of the year. TrailMix and Yankeesfan will do our best to get a box planted each month in a timely fashion. However, if we have another winter like 2010-2011, it will be quite a challenge! See you on the trails!

September – School! School! School!

Bonus Stamp

Upon finding the September box, you will find a “bonus stamp”. This stamp pays tribute to Shelton High School and Shelton Intermediate School. Here is a little history of the schools dating back to 1953. In that year, Shelton High School was located on Perry Hill Road and remained there until 1974, when the current building on Meadow Street was built. The Perry Hill building was then converted to Shelton Intermediate School and used until 2001, when the new Intermediate school on Constitution Blvd North opened. The building on Perry Hill Road remained empty, except for some offices, for more than a decade, until 2010, when the new 5/6 school, Perry Hill School, was dedicated. Along with SHS, SIS and PHS, Shelton has 5 elementary schools: Booth Hill, Elizabeth Shelton, Long Hill, Mohegan and Sunnyside. SIS has the Viking as it's mascot, and orange and white are the school colors. The SHS sports teams are the Gaels and Gaelettes. The school colors are orange and black. So,two ink pads are included in the box. In keeping with school spirit, use black ink for one stamp, and orange ink for the other. Go Vikings! Go Gaels!

Directions

This box is located on the Shelton Lakes Greenway trail. Coming from Huntington Center on rte. 108 and counting the traffic light by St. Lawrence church as light #1, count 4 traffic lights. Just past the 4th light on your left will be Pine Lake. Immediately past the lake on the left is the parking area.

Clues

The first part of this trail is very cool and almost surreal looking. Follow the trail until you come to Meadow St. Carefully cross the street to meet the trail on the other side. Look for the HALO 3 – alpha BOX along this part of the trail. Then continue on. Next, you will come to a path that crosses the trail. To your right, the path leads up to SHS, to your left, it leads to SIS. Wish the class of 2012 at SHS the best of luck, and tell the new 7th graders at SIS to study hard, then continue straight across the path. Continue on the trail, crossing Constitution Blvd. You are now on the Turkey Trot Trail, which is a white blazed trail. Walk until, on your left, you encounter a large tree with a "3-D" yellow blaze. At this point, take the white trail to your right. Continue along until you pass a large stone on your left that is next to an Elm tree. Then, to the right of that, notice the stone against the Maple tree. When you see the next large stone with the cascading Elm branch above it, look behind the stone to it's left. I hope the box is there! And I am happy to report that after surviving fires, riots, bomb threats and a media blitz, the class of 2012 had an uneventful senior year. All 401 of them graduated on June11!
