Take a drive to the quiet side of the island. At the top of Somes Sound is a lovely village of white houses with black or green shutters. The Mount Desert Island Historical Society Museum and Gardens are located across from the Somesville Library and Mill Pond. From the parking lot find the view from the Mill Pond to Somes Sound, over the Bar Island sand bar to Sargent Mountain. Follow the gravel parkway to an information panel outside the Museum and learn about the history of the waterway. Behind you is an heirloom garden. Sit on the bench under the trellis among the plantings. Over your left shoulder, a tree almost reaches the trellis. Follow the branches to the base of the tree where the letterbox is hidden under a rock. Please tightly reseal and hide the box when you are through.
