The first time I walked at Camp Columbia it was sunny and peaceful. Families were out with kids, dogs and babies in strollers. There were flowers all around and butterflies in the air. This butterfly can live there year round.

To reach Camp Columbia State Park go to Morris at the intersection of routes 61 and 109. Go about 1.3 miles west on route 109 to the parking area on the left. Before leaving home print a trail map which you can find online. The map board was empty today.

Take the green trail starting at the map board. Go down a hill, up, bear left toward a building and then on toward the tower. Go down the grassy hill to the right and make your way to the crumbling paved road that starts a little below the tower.

This road takes you past a Wildlife Management Area where they cleared trees for a more diverse habitat. Right now it is covered with yellow goldenrod and other wildflowers and there is a great view of nearby hills.

Follow the road down the hill. When you reach the bottom and the road starts uphill you will turn back the way you came. As you start back along the cleared area notice the long row of maple trees lining the road on your right. The first one in the row is now a VERY LARGE stump or snag. Stand next to it and look left into a fern glen. See the stump that is about 6 feet tall? The tree has fallen sort-of toward you. Make your way over there and you will find the butterfly waiting. It is near the stump, between the fallen and the boulder.

Retrace your steps back toward the tower and try another trail or continue on back to your car.
