Girl Scout Troop 63210 completed a Coast Guard IP Badge during the spring of 2011. As part of their requirements, they designed their own activity to share what they had learned. Of particular interest to the girls was the stories about a bear named "Objee" who lived among the cadets. The troop designed a series of 3 letterboxes dedicated to this special cadet. The boxes are placed at Fort Trumbull State Park, the location of the first Coast Guard Academy. Note that although the park is open daily from 8am to sunset and is free of charge, 2 of the 3 letterboxes are placed inside the fort. The fort is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 5pm from May 21st until Columbus Day. There is an admission charge which is currently $6 for adults (ages 13 and up), $2 for children (ages 6-12), and free from those ages 5 and under.

Box #1: Semper Paratus Box

The Coast Guard motto is Semper Paratus which means "Always Ready". Are you ready for a fun hunt to find this special stamp? Start at the south battery sign near the cannons and head north passing the visitors center and gift shop. You will arrive at the fort entrance. Enter the fort and climb the spiral staircase to the upper level. As you exit the staircase, look for 3 smiles on the ground directly in front of you. At the first smile, spot the missing tooth. Inside the cavity is your treasure. You are at the correct "tooth" if the flag pole has a bearing of 340 degrees from your location.

Box #2: Cadet Objee Box

Find your way to Cadet Objee by entering the fort and approaching the "up" staircase. Do not ascend the stairs though. From this point, spot 2 alcoves to the right. Enter the alcove at the far right. There will be an American Revolution sign on your left and a Fort Interiors sign on your right. Enjoy the view from the far right window (southwest corner of the fort). Under the windowsill, tucked far back on the floor, is your prize.

Box #3: The Potties at Rocky Ledge Box

Did you know that Objee used the same bathroom facilities as the human cadets? He was actually a gift to the academy. Find your way by starting at the site orientation plaque near the visitors center. Head north towards for entrance, making a right at the gift shop. Head northeast, following the path along north battery. Turn right at the end of the fence and head towards fishing pier and pier #7. As you come around the bend, spot staircases to your left. Descend 2 staircases and then follow the long curving pathway until you reach a building. There, you can take a break and purchase a soda. Behind the building is a group of large rocks. Look in the large crack at about waist height for your prize. It is nestled under some smaller rocks near a tree growing from the crack.

We hope you enjoy the series!!!
