The Monster

This very famous monster was introduced in a novel written by Mary Shelley and first published anonymously in 1818. Shelley’s name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. After that, the monster was on his way to fame. Numerous movies have been made about him and his creator, Victor Frankenstein, the first of which actually premiered in 1910. The most famous and frightening is the 1931 version. Others include The Bride of Frankenstein, 1935; Son of Frankenstein, 1939; Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, 1948; The Curse of Frankenstein, 1957; and Mel Brooks’ zany comedy, Young Frankenstein, 1974. Why all the fuss over this hideous monster? I would say it’s because of his charming personality! Look for “The Monster’s” sister box, “October”, which is just a scream away.

Directions

Located on the Housatonic Rail-Trail at the Pepper Street end of Cutler’s Farm Road in Monroe. If you are coming from Rte 25 and heading north, take a right onto Pepper Street at the corner where Country Pizza is located. Take a right onto Cutler’s Farm Road. The parking area will be your second left.

Clues

Carefully cross the street from the parking area to the trail. Walk until you come to a wooden bench on your left. Follow the trail behind the bench into the woods. This is not a well marked trail and is strewn with leaves and small branches since tropical storm Irene hit. Once you enter the woods, follow the trail to your left. Keep walking until you see a stone wall ahead. Then bear to your right. This is when you should find the “October” box. But for “The Monster”, keep walking until you come to a large 2 sister tree on your right (each sister of the tree has 2 more sisters). The Monster is at the base of the tree. Please rehide carefully and fully. Please Note: the mosquitoes ferociously attacked while planting these boxes. Arm yourself with bug spray.
