06/10/2014: The attempted logged by twinkle was accompanied by a note to me about not being able to find the stump by the side of the trail; since there is no stump in the clue I don't know what that was all about. Just sayin'

NOTE from Calli-K (03/06/2011): With 4Dtoes' blessing I adopted this box a few days ago and when checking on it for maintenance discovered it was missing from the place I found it in Oct. 2009. This surprised me, because it was there last summer, and it has been in its hiding place for over 7 years without a hitch. I like the clues and location so much I decided to carve a new image from the image I have in my own log book (not an original 4Dtoes but I did my very best), made a new log book, and put a new box in the original location. IF someone happens to find the original box somewhere out there (sometimes boxes migrate for unknown reasons, and certainly stranger things have happened) please let me know. I would of course prefer to be doing maintenance on the original.

The original clues as posted in 2003 are as follows:

This Box is a joint effort of John & Carie. (The Fleshmans & The Lennens 3)

From HWY 97 at Terrebonne follow the signs to Smith Rock State Park. Parking costs $3.00 [has gone up to $5.00 since 2003] for the day & tickets are available at vending machines throughout the park. Be sure to pick up a Trail Guide.

Many years ago, before the white man invaded this beautiful country, a strong and noble people inhabited this area. They believed that they were descendants of the powerful deity, Coyote... supreme ruler of all the earth. They were the SHOSHONI. They also believed in Tawa, the Sun God. Ancient Indian legend states that the sun’s rays directly hit what today is known as Smith Rock, every day of the year. (This area receives less than 10 inches of precipitation and has over 300 days of sunshine per year.) Enjoy this magnificent natural wonder & take in some rays.

CLUES: From the parking area find the Rim Trail and head to the west end of the park. Stone pillars on your right. Count 20 to a Vertical Dance. Continue on around. An old Chief sits on the side of the hill. The younger warrior watches from above as he shelters the trail. Two stones to the left. Collect your treasure.

CAUTION: This is snake country, use caution when reaching in holes, etc.

PLEASE REHIDE AS WELL OR BETTER THAN YOU FOUND THIS BOX SO THAT NOTHING IS VISIBLE TO PEOPLE WALKING BY – THERE IS A FAIR AMOUNT OF FOOT TRAFFIC DURING THE WARMER MONTHS.
