Adrian Burk was born in 1927 in Mexia. His family moved to Joinerville and he played football at Gaston High School. He went on to play football at Kilgore College, where he helped his team take a trip to the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca and earned a National Championship in 1946. Burk then went to Baylor where he was drafted by Baltimore and then later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and held the quarterback position from 1951-1956. While with the Eagles, he set the NFL record for touchdown passes in a game (seven), which he is still co-holder. After retiring from football, he became a NFL referee. He was on the crew that called the "Immaculate Reception" in the Pittsburg-Oakland playoff game in 1972 and also the Christmas Day marathon between Kansas City and Miami in 1971. He also helped Bud Adams in setting up the Houston Oiler organization in 1959 and 1960. He retired in Henderson in 1998 and passed away in 2003. He had an amazing career and Gaston High School had a major impact on that career.

This box is located at the Gaston High School in Joinerville. The high school has been closed as a school since 1965 but today is housing a church. The Gaston Red Devils were definitely something to be proud of. The high school is located next to the Gaston Museum. Pull into the entrance to the school that is closest to the Gaston Museum. Follow the rock wall until you get to some crepe myrtles planted along the iron ore fence. The letterbox is hanging in the crepe myrtle closest to the Gaston Museum next to the rock wall.
