There are a variety of interesting things to see and do when you visit this small, historic community, and this clue will lead you right to one of them! To begin your visit though, you'll undoubtedly encounter Washington Street, also known as IL Route 106. This road takes you all the way through town, and right past the Visitor Center, where you'll find information on local points of interest, food, lodging, etc. Don't miss visiting the famous 1894 octagonal, red-domed courthouse, located in the town square, and if you're a history buff, you might also be interested in the "talking house tour", which takes you around town to a dozen or so, Lincoln-related locations. After you've had a chance to get the feel of this cozy, rural-based community, you'll probably want to get started on the letterbox quest. Begin your search on East Adams street, on the north side of the town square, where the earlier-mentioned historic courthouse is located. Heading west, cross the intersection, and continue west one block. Look for a brick building with an arched doorway and tiled roof. Above the doorway are words which identify the location.

At this point, you'll need to jot down the following numbers, left to right, in this order:

How many letters are in the second word over the arched doorway at the entrance?
How many letters are in the first word over the arched doorway at the entrance?
How many words are there in total over the arched doorway at the entrance?

You should now have three numbers written down (hopefully in the correct order!).

Go up the steps and enter the double doors. Once inside, go up the next set of steps and through the swinging double doors. Now locate a 300+ year old grandfather clock. (There'll be an old fellow sitting across from the clock, but he won't give a hoot.) With the clock on your RIGHT side, walk straight ahead, to enter a room where you'll need to look for a tan-colored sign/poster mounted on the end of some shelving. When you locate the sign/poster, look at it, and use the three numbers you wrote down earlier to help you locate the letterbox. After stamping in, please return the box to the exact place where you found it, for others to enjoy. Good luck, and Happy Trails !
