Bigalow Hollow State Park, Union CT
There is an entrance fee on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The letterbox is less than a half mile hike one way and the park is a great place for swimming and paddling.
Drive all the way to the end of the road to the boat launch parking lot. The trail begins near the dock next to the boat launch. Follow the sign post that will take you to the "picnic area."
Take a left at the port-o-potties following the gravel path. (Note: The port-o-potties may be seasonal, so you can also take a left at the hikers sign post.) Follow the light blue and white trail blazes.
You will arrive at a large trail sign: "Rock Island" to the right and "Mashapaug Cove Picnic Area" to the left. Continue straight, off the trail and past the sign toward the lake shortly ahead of you. Enjoy the SMALL sandy beach and the beautiful lake.
Turn around so that your back is facing the lake. Look to your right and you will notice a mountain laurel tree growing horizontally about ten feet away. Just below the tree and at the base of the trunk, you will see a rock concealing the letterbox. The letterbox is well hidden but this is a high traffic area. Please be discrete when retrieving the letterbox.
