BY THE MON #2

The Monongahela River (The MON) is formed by the confluence of the Tygart and West Fork Rivers at Fairmont, WV and flows north to Pittsburgh, PA. Along its 130 mile course, the MON is joined by the Cheat River and at Pittsburgh, the Mon and Allegheny rivers combine to form the mighty Ohio River. All along the MON there are segments of Rail-to-Trail being developed that some day may connect to create a truly amazing, continuous trail system through WV and PA.

HOW TO GET THERE

Two letterboxes have been placed "BY THE MON". As with other "linear" parks there are several ways to reach each letterbox, depending on ones motivation. Both these boxes were placed with bicyclists in mind, but both letterboxes can be reached by shorter walks. Box #2 is located closer to Morgantown.

Bicyclists can ride out from Morgantown (approximately 3 miles from the city limits where the paved trail ends).
Ride past mile marker 13 and the Uffington marina and under the interstate 79 bridge.
Watch carefully on the left for the the open hillside with the chain link fence uphigh on the hill. This fence is around the treatment plant.
Beyond this opening there is a gulley on the left and past that gulley a group of small trees and a single, much larger tree about 30 feet off the trail.
At the base of this tree notice the rock wall (only about 8 inches high).
On the far side of these rocks about 20 feet past the large tree you will fine BY THE MON #2.

Walkers can reach the Uffington marina by taking the 1 exit off I-68. Follow state route 119 north to the state route 73 south intersection. About one mile beyond the Morgantown Motel turn off state route 73 to the right.
Hike upstream under the I-79 bridge and watch carefully on the left for the open hillside with the chain link fence high up on the hill. This fence is around a water treatment plant.
Beyond this opening there is a gulley on the left and past that gulley a group of small trees and a single, much larger tree about 30 feet off the trail.
At the base of this tree notice the rock wall (only about 8 inches high).
On the far side of these rocks about 20 feet past the large tree you will fine BY THE MON #2 with a flat rock on top of it.
