Go to the intersection of Bussey Hill Road and Valley Road. On the east side of the road is a green bench; go to the bench.

Behind the bench is a large sweetgum that was accessioned in 1938. Have a look at the leaves with 5 points. What color are the leaves?.

Continue walking behind the bench for 13 steps until you reach the tree trunk with deeply furrowed bark. This tree is a sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum). It also has beautiful fall color, but its leaf is a simple blade.

Continue another 13 steps in the same direction to find another large sweetgum, several leaves on this tree have 7 points. There are also some low branches where you can easily see the fruits.

Duck under the low branches (or go around the tree) and make a slight left so you are heading uphill. Continue 23 steps to yet another sweetgum.

You have arrived at the tree with the letterbox! Notice anything unusual about the bark on the branches? Find the letterbox hidden behind the trunk under the new growth and follow the directions inside. Please leave everything as you found it.
