Exit 8 off Route 9. Head East off Exit on Beaver Meadow Rd.
Take a right onto Turkey Hill Rd in 1 mile.
When road forks, bear right onto Cedar Lake Rd in 1 mile.
Cockaponset State Forest is on your right in 3 miles.
Drive through park (the lake will be on your right) and park in the back parking lot.

Start Walking out of the parking lot towards the lake.
Take a left past the yellow gate and start walking on the trail with the map in front of it heading west.

The hike basically goes along the perimeter of the lake, clockwise.

Markers on the trees are blue/red. You will pass on your right a rock my kids call the couch rock.

Next you will cross "Rock Valley."

The trail veers away from the lake, just continue following the red/blue trail.

Cross the stream.

Continue on the red/blue trail, pass through a rocky area (when you look left up the hill, there are many rocks.) Continue on the red/blue trail for 55 adult steps to the whale rock (this will be on your left.) It looks like a whale's head coming out of the water. The letterbox is hidden under the whale's chin, covered with leaves.

After you have found the letterbox you can turn around the way you came or finish the hike. It takes our family almost 2 hours to go all the way around the pond but that is walking with a 8, 6 and 4 year old with many snack and water breaks.

Our family has been letterboxing for about 2 years and this is our first letterbox plant. We love this hike and when we saw this rock about a year ago, we knew it was the perfect place.
