"Mudpuppy" (Necturus Proteidae)

This is my new altar-ego. (There is an intended pun, here, for those who know me.) The mudpuppy is an aquatic salamander that always manages to find the wettest, muddiest places to hide.
Mudpuppy stamps will always be located near to the wettest, muddiest trails that I know. Even during the hottest, driest summers, these trails are WET! And after I have hiked through these trails, "Mudpuppy" Me always appears.

DIRECTIONS

This letterbox is located in Webb Mt. Park, off of East Village Road in Monroe, CT. It can be reached from RT34W to RT111S, or RT25N to RT111N.

CLUES

The entrance to the Park is a long, winding and descending road. It will take you to an obvious parking area alongside of a babbling brook. There is a pump here that serves potable water. At this point, the road is gated. If the gate is closed and locked, park here and walk down the road. (As of Nov. 2011, the access road is blocked by a large fallen tree. So parking outside of the gate is advisable.)

Follow the road to the post/marker for Campsites 2-5. The RED TRAIL crosses the road at this point. Take a right and follow the trail down the hill to the wooden bridge. (Another day, take the left section of the red trail up the steep hill to a beautiful Overlook and view of the river.)

Cross the bridge and take a right, following the red blazes. It should become obvious why Mudpuppy is so content here. Muddy, sloppy, slippery, slidey, or all of the above, follow the red blazes until the trail crosses over a metal drainpipe buried underneath the trail. To the left, you will notice blue blazes leading up the hill. The blue to the yellow will eventually lead you back to your vehicle. To find Mudpuppy, stay on the red trail. A large tree has fallen across the trail in the last storm. Work your way around to the other side of the tree so that you are still on the red. The trail heads up an incline toward a No.7 marker. Take the red trail only as far as the first blaze on your left. Stop at that blaze and look through the woods to the top of the hill. You should see a large 4-sister tree with one barely a stump. The MUDPUPPY ONE LETTERBOX is at the base of the tree behind some rocks.

After you have hidden the letterbox, go back to the blue trail. Follow it to the first intersection with the yellow trail. Take a right onto the yellow, which will lead you back to the parking spot.
