An Inuksuk is a stone landmark or cairn built by humans, used by the Inuit in the Arctic region of North America. It is used by the Inuit people as guides and markers for special places in the Arctic, marking trails, caches of food, nearby people, or the migration routes of caribou. An inuksuk-like monument in the form of a human being is called an inunnguaq (an imitation of a person).

The Inuksuk letterbox is in Buffam Brook Conservation Area in Pelham.

Directions to Starting Location: From the center of Amherst, take Main St. east, cross the traffic lights at North East St., continue into Pelham. Across from the Pelham Community Center/Library, take a left onto North Valley Rd. Drive 0.5 miles to the narrow parking area on the left, just past a “Sunrise/Sunset” parking sign and underneath power lines. Park at the Sunrise/Sunset parking sign.

Walk up the road (taking care as the traffic comes fast around the corners) until you see the trail across from a white house. Cross the bridge and follow the white blazes for the M&M trail to the right. Follow the white blazes until you see the waterfall at the foot of the wooden stairs. Enjoy the falls. Continue along the M&M trail—it drops steeply down toward the river. At the bottom of the descent turn right and see a cliff of rocky ledges adjacent to the river. Make your way along the ledges (going downstream) until you come to the last big hemlock tree jutting out from the rock ledge. The letterbox is in a chest high alcove in the ledges across from a rotting tree trunk beside the river.

Bring ink and make sure it is closed well.
