Base of Mt. Orient letterbox marks a favorite junction of two trails--either of which will bring you to some lovely areas.
Directions to Starting Location: From the center of Amherst, take Main St. east, cross the traffic lights at North East St., continue into Pelham. Across from the Pelham Community Center/Library, take a left onto North Valley Rd. Drive 0.5 miles to the narrow parking area on the left, just past a “Sunrise/Sunset” parking sign and underneath power lines. Park at the Sunrise/Sunset parking sign.
Clue: The M & M trail starts about 50 feet south of the parking. The trail has white blazes and starts with a steep rocky climb. When you reach the power lines, follow the M & M trail left. You go past some logging areas until you hear a waterfall. This area near the waterfall is quite beautiful if you climb down into the valley. Here the M& M trail joins with the Robert Frost Trail (blazed orange). The Robert Frost Trail heads down toward Amethyst Brook conservation area. Turn onto the Robert Frost Trail and cross the brook in the trail. Look to the right to a rock ledge. The Base of Mt. Orient letterbox is in an cave in this ledge. Hide well as it faces the trail.
