Look for a county park in Salem "Kpszwjmmf" (these letters have been advanced one). Couple notes about these boxes before I get to the clues. Black ink is preferable. There is only one logbook for the series and it is in box #1. There are also 2 finder prizes for first and second finders to take with them. These are planted in December, when ground cover is minimal. If you are hunting in the spring or summertime it may invariably be more difficult to locate some side trails. As always please be safe while letterboxing and alert to poison oak and any wildlife (including insects) that might be out. This is a public park but it's in the woods with all the exciting dangers that come with nature here in Oregon.

Clues:
Box #1: From the parking lot find the main trail into the park. You'll see a memorial stone to some Pioneers that looks like an over sized gravestone. From here head uphill on the paved trail. This used to be a road that cars could drive up but cars have not been allowed up here since probably the 80s I think. Hike up up up and look for the first non paved trail marked with small posts. Take this trail into the woods and go until you find a rainbow tree covering the trail with a canopy. Just before the rainbow tree look for a small deer trail to the left. Go up hill to the second large tree on the right and look behind and under leaves and bark.

Box#2: Go back to the rainbow tree and continue on that trail you were on before. When the path splits take the steeper trail with steps cut out of the dirt. Go up up up till the stairs end where a log is across the trail. Before stepping over the log look to the left. There is a small deer trail heading along and then over the log sort of ending where the small root ball is. Look behind the root ball and under bark.

Box #3: Go back to the trail you were on and continue up. Soon you'll come to what I call the Twilight Tree. (See photo) Stop here for a photo op. A little further you'll see a power line pole with a meter... looks a bit strange out here in the trees. Opposite this pole, on your other side, is a large Siamese twin. From between these two look ahead and slightly to your right. You'll see a clearing with a cute family of 5. Looks like a nice spot for a villain to hide? Guess again. See the path in front of that tree running parallel to the one you're on? Get on that trail and head the opposite way you are facing now. (This would be the best time to pause your hunt and check out the ancient overgrown parking lot with boarded up outhouse -or powerhouse?- which always has different graffiti on it every time we're up here.) Back to the hunt... From the family of five, heading in the direction opposite of what you were going before, you'll find yourself heading for a field. Right before you exit the woods look to your left for a many trunked tree tangled with a wire fence. Look between the many trunks nearest the exit of the woods.

Box #4: Continue on this path into the field. The path skirts the open field between the field and the trees and there are many trails back into the woods along this trail. The field can't all be seen. If the grass is not too tall you may go up to the top of the hill to see the whole field and a beautiful view of the valley south and east of Salem. Our Superpup loves to run and play in this field especially if there are other dogs around. Continue on the skirting trail until you see an island at the top of the hill. Once you can see the island start looking for a trail into the woods that matches this description: The path is an S curve down hill. You pass two snags in the first 10 steps (you may argue the first is just a tall stump and I probably wouldn't debate you on that). At 10 steps you can see a third very large snag further down. If this is true you are on the right path. Go down and pass the large snag. From there you can see a rainbow branch where the trail splits. Take the trail to the left going up a little. You'll see a quadruple tree with a wide bowl. Look inside under bark.

Box #5: Go back to where your path split and get back on the main trail headed down. Go down down down, watch your step, down down down. The path will curve and the down hill will get shallow. Here there is a wider area with a many trunked tree with lots of suckers on your left. There is also a very convenient log for sitting behind and to the side of this many trunked tree where you can sit off the trail. Before you go sit though, look behind the sucker tree for a wide rotting stump. In Spring it may be hidden by ferns. It may be about 8-10 steps behind and to the right of the sucker tree from the trail. Look in the center of the stump under bark and leaves. There were several deer trails at the time of planting. I hope they are still there in the summer but I can't be sure.

Box #6: Back on the trail, continue the way you were going. You may recognize where you are when you see the dirt steps to your right. Keep straight and you'll come back to the paved trail. Head back down toward the parking lot, looking for a steep side trail to your right. Go up up up. At the first T turn right. At the Second T turn left and pass a humongous snag. You might have to lay down and look up at it to make sure it's a snag.... its a wide rotting tree with small branches and no top. Pass this on your right and continue down the path. You'll duck under a small tree and once you do you can see it is a member of a large family rooted to your left. Get down below them and look between the lower siblings.

Congratulations! You found all the villains. Please log your finds on AQ too and let me know how they are or if you feel landscaping has changed enough that the clues would benefit from updating. I hope you've enjoyed this forgotten gem of a park. Thanks!
