Location: This letterboxing adventure takes place at the Robert C. McDonell Campground, which is located on Tuckerman Lane in Rockville/Potomac Maryland, just past the Cabin John Park at: 7701 Tuckerman Lane, Potomac, MD 20854. The entrance to the Campground is on Tuckerman Lane, between Westlake and Seven Locks. It is next to a small ballfield and is marked with 6 parking spaces and a small brown sign on Tuckerman Lane. Park in one of the 6 spaces.

Time needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour for all 3 boxes.

This is a story about a little boy, a little girl, their little sister, a turkey and some ice skates.

The Story –
One day, a little boy and a little girl asked their Mom and Dad if they could go ice skating in the forest.
“Sure” said the Mom.
“Sure” said the Dad.
The little boy and little girl grabbed their little sister and started out into the forest. They all passed a small stream and decided to each toss in a stone and make a wish. They all made their wishes and went off to go ice skating in the forest.

Clues to Letterbox #1 --

1) After parking your car in one of the few spots on Tuckerman in front of the Robert C. McDonell Campground sign. Cross the bridge toward the gravel service road.

2) Pick up a small pebble. Make a wish and then throw it into the creek. The Cubs Clubbers hope your wish comes true – they usually do.

3) Continue to walk on the gravel road. After about 50 steps you will pass a blue water spigot on your left side. Walk 20 more steps. Look to the left at the big rock on the creek bed. This rock is known as Tushie rock!

4) Turn right onto a small dirt path. (across from road from Tushie rock) You will see a fallen log at the start of the path. If the path is muddy, walk on the small stones lining the path for about 20 steps.

5) Walk about 60 steps and take a right fork on the path toward the little green house. Continue on the path past the green house.

More Story – As the kids arrived at their small green skating shack, they got out their ice skates and put them on. Suddenly, the most beautiful turkey gobbled by. The kids thought the turkey said “follow me”, so they did.

6) Continue on the path to follow the turkey.

7) At the first set of large rocks on your left, look just above the rocks for a tree with a hole at the base. There may be rocks in front of the hole. Look in the hole. Inside the hole you should find the 1st Letterbox! Be sure to put the rocks back to partially cover the tree hole.

Back to the Story –
The kids were now following the beautiful turkey through the forest. It continued to say “Follow me…Follow me!” The littlest girl couldn’t keep up so her big sister stopped to carry her. Before she could stop she tripped on a log and her skate went flying in the air. Out of nowhere an animal jumped out and grabbed the skate…and ran off! The skate was really sharp and so when the animal caught it…something from inside the animal’s mouth went flying out into the air just like the skate had. Whatever it was ...it landed on a nearby tree stump. The animal didn’t care and so it continued to run away through the forest with the skate!

Clues to Letterbox #2:
8) After finding Letterbox #1, come back to the path. The creek and road are on your right side. Continue on the path.

9) After about 10-15 yards, pass the “Meeting Table” tree stump

10) Continue on the path as it goes up a slightly steep hill. When you get to the top of the hill look on your right and you should see 3-4 big fallen trees. Continue on the path to go slightly down hill and away from the creek and road. Soon the path will go slightly up hill again. Continue on the path.

11) You will pass a camp site on your left. When you see a picnic table on the left side of the path – stop and look to the right side of the path, look up and you will see a tall “V” tree (one tree split into two). Beyond the V tree, in the forest, look for a gnarled piece of tree stump on the ground. It is about 10 feet behind the V tree. It may have sticks and rocks on it. Inside is the 2nd Letterbox! Please cover it back up when done so animals or campers don’t see it.

Back to the story again –The little girl had found her skate and put it back on her foot. But when she looked up her brother and little sister had run off, chasing a frog through the forest. The frog croaked “come find the magical rocks”. The little girl skated off quickly so that she could follow her brother, the little sister and the frog.

Clues to Letterbox #3:
12) Go back to the path and continue to walk on the path. If you are lucky, after a while you may see some magical white rocks along the way (hard to see in summer). Continue on the path, stepping over several decaying logs. You will pass another set of picnic tables on your left. You will pass a sawed and partially fallen tree trunk (update – this trunk is now fully sawed – stump on left of path, log pieces on right of path). (Note: letterbox is coming up in about 150 steps...keep reading!) Start counting steps at the partially fallen tree trunk.
13) After about 20 steps, look for the magical rock on the right (hard to see in summer).
14) After another 40 steps, look for the magical rock on the left (hard to see – lots of sawed trees now).
15) Walk another 60 steps and follow the path’s slight decline.
16) After another 30 or 40 steps, stop and look on your left (15 feet left of the trail) for a V tree with a tree limb stuck through it (this was about 150 steps from the sawed tree stump).
17) Walk over toward the V tree – about 10 yards into the forest. Stand under the arch of the fallen limb. Have your back toward the path. Look left about 10 feet. There are 2 big trees with fallen trees on the ground between them. Walk to the base of the left large tree. Look between the base and the fallen logs. There you will find the 3rd Letterbox! Be sure to recover the box with sticks and leaves.

Story Ending – The kids caught up to the magical frog and the beautiful turkey. The little girl kissed the frog and the frog turned into a hockey player, so the little boy and the frog went off to play hockey. The little sister gave the turkey a big hug, which made the turkey smile and grow into a huge flying turkey. Both sisters climbed on the turkey’s back and flew home where their mother made them their favorite cookies and cups of hot chocolate with their cousins – Noodle and Yo-Yo. The kids’ wishes had come true.

GETTING HOME: To get back to your car you have two choices.

Option A) You can retrace your steps on the path you just walked. This is a little shorter than Option B.
OR
Option B) This option is slightly longer (total 15 -20 minutes), but is a nice walk back to the car.
From the V tree continue walking away from the path into the forest about 50 yards. Note - There is no path to follow, you are walking into the woods, but don’t worry --- You are very near a small dirt road - ahead. You should be walking away from the letterbox and with the old path behind you.
After 50 yards in the woods you will come to a dirt service road. Once you arrive, turn left onto the dirt road.
Pass a small wooden bridge on your left. Continue on the road uphill. You will soon see some brown signs by a set of picnic tables. Continue straight past the Port-a-John toward the gravel road and toward the highway. After 5-6 minutes of walking the creek will be on your right side. You are 1/3 the way back to your car.

In about 5 minutes you will see a camp map ahead. Continue on the road toward the right. Walk 5 more minutes and you will arrive at your car. We hope you enjoyed our letterbox adventure!!

Hope you had fun!
