Madison Town Pound [built in 1792],(Taken directly from A Brief History of Madison, Compiled by the Public Schools of Madison, Assisted by the Madison Men’s Club, 1925-26.)
“The only Pound, which the town had in early days, was situated at the turn of the road as you go from Maple Avenue to Pearson’s Heights. It was a square enclosure built all the way round with a high stone wall. On the top of the wall on the four sides were hewed beams one foot square. Posts one and a half feet high were sunk at intervals in the beams. On top of these posts other beams four inches square were places with the posts fastened in them. On the north side was a swing gate with a lock. The Pound was used for enclosing stray cattle. The owners could get their animals after paying for what damage they had done.
Thomas Granville was the last pound keeper, elected in 1861 to care for the Pound and keep it locked and in repair, also to look after stray cattle and collect pay for damage done. He was elected for a number of years. Then use of the Pound was abandoned. “
Thomas Granville was also the father of the Granville Brothers who set a new aviation world speed record in 1931. He and his wife raised their family just down the road.
In 1976 the Madison Historical Society sponsored a restoration project to repair the tumbled stone walls and remove trees and brush that had grown in and around the Pound. More about the Pound and Madison History can be found at the Madison Historical Society website at http://madisonhistorical.us/index.html
Clues : Starting at Madison Corner Rte 113 and East Madison Road, travel south down East Madison Road approximately .3 of a mile and turn left onto Pound Road. Follow Pound Road .9 of a mile to the top of the hill where you will discover the stone enclosure. Be safe and respectful. Do not walk on the Pound walls or remove any of the stones. Stand with back against the side of the stone Town Pound sign and face the Pound. Take 12 average steps along the outside, of the Pound. Notice a downed tree just inside the forest's edge to your left. Carefully make your way to this tree and follow it downward towards its larger end. Stop just before the discarded, needleless Christmas tree. Look for a small cluster of twigs piled on top of the downed tree. Here is where you will discover your reward. Replace the box just as you found it.
